Marib Health Office Reveals Four Child Deaths from Diphtheria in the Governorate

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The Public Health and Population Office in Marib announced today, Thursday, that it has recorded the deaths of 4 children from the disease Diphtheria (the Strangles), including two cases during last October.
The office confirmed that (57) suspected cases of Diphtheria were registered by the epidemiological surveillance in Marib during 2025 through the governorate’s Rapid Response Teams, which are making field efforts in monitoring, investigation, and follow-up of infected cases.
The Marib Health Office called upon parents to stress the importance of early reporting of suspected cases and visiting the nearest health facility. It also pointed out the importance of spreading health awareness about the necessity of disease prevention through immunization.
It emphasized the importance of vaccination for the prevention of Diphtheria for children from one and a half months to five years old by taking routine immunization doses, with booster doses given to those under twelve years old.
It noted that a person potentially infected with Diphtheria suffers from inflammation of the tonsils, pharynx, or larynx with the presence of a membrane adhering to the tonsils, pharynx, or nose. The membrane is typically white to grayish and connected to the throat.
