Yemen and IMF Discuss Economic Reforms and Resumption of Consultations

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen, Ahmed Ahmed Ghaleb, and the Minister of Finance, Marwan bin Ghanem, met on Thursday with the Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund, Jihad Azour, on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington.

According to sources, the meeting discussed the progress of resuming Article IV consultations between Yemen and the IMF, after a hiatus lasting several years — a step that reflects enhanced cooperation between the two sides.

The sources added that the two parties discussed options for the next phase to support economic reform efforts in Yemen, including addressing fiscal and monetary policy imbalances, and creating conditions to benefit from the IMF’s financing programs.

The meeting, attended by a number of officials from the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance, emphasized the importance of continuing to implement economic and financial reforms to enhance macroeconomic stability and improve confidence both domestically and internationally.

The discussions also addressed developments in regional conditions and tensions in the Middle East, as well as their potential repercussions on the global economy, particularly in fragile states, including Yemen, amid rising shipping and insurance costs, commodity and energy prices, and the resulting pressures on public finances and the balance of payments.
