UN Official: Yemen’s Children Face a Health Catastrophe

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

A shocking UN report has revealed a severe deterioration in Yemen’s humanitarian situation, making the country one of the most food-insecure nations in the world.

Ramesh Rajasingham, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, reported that half of all children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition.

Figures show that nearly 50% of these children are stunted, a condition that affects their growth and makes them more vulnerable to disease and infection.

According to the report, the risk of death among these children is up to 12 times higher than that of their peers in other countries.

The UN official highlighted the tragic case of a Yemeni infant named Ahmed, who is just nine months old and suffers from severe underweight.

The baby is in critical health in Abs District, Hajjah Governorate, having lost more than two-thirds of his normal weight and becoming too weak even to sit up.

Ahmed’s mother, Hafsa, faces immense challenges in providing proper care for her son amid harsh living conditions.

The child urgently needs medical intervention to treat his acute malnutrition, which has been worsened by high fever and chronic diarrhea.

Rajasingham urged the international community to act immediately and increase funding to save millions of Yemenis from preventable hunger.

He stressed the need to expand emergency food and nutrition assistance, with a particular focus on supporting the Yemen Humanitarian Fund.
