International Group Warns Against Consequences of Delaying Political Dialogue in Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The “A3+” group in the UN Security Council has expressed deep concern over the ongoing political instability in Yemen, stressing that any delay to the inclusive dialogue process could worsen the humanitarian situation and deepen divisions among the warring parties.

This statement was delivered during a UN Security Council meeting in New York by Trishala Persaud, Deputy Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations. She spoke on behalf of the group, which includes non-permanent African members of the Council (Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Somalia), as well as Guyana from the Caribbean region.

The group emphasized the importance of de-escalation and restraint by all Yemeni parties to reach a comprehensive, Yemeni-led and -owned political settlement under UN auspices. They highlighted the need for the effective participation of all relevant stakeholders, including women and youth.

The group noted that prioritizing confidence-building measures, such as reopening roads, airports, and ports, is crucial for fostering trust between the conflicting parties and facilitating essential economic and humanitarian activities.

In this context, the group commended the diligent efforts of Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen, and his team. They praised his work in facilitating a purely Yemeni political process based on relevant Security Council resolutions and urged the Yemeni parties to break the deadlock and achieve lasting and sustainable peace.

Regarding the regional context, the group renewed its call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, believing that this would help ease regional tensions and create favorable conditions for peace in Yemen.

While expressing serious concern about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the group highlighted the obstacles hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid and the impact of funding shortages on relief operations.

Therefore, the group called on the international community to intensify its support and humanitarian assistance, and to contribute more significantly to the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plans. They also stressed the need to provide necessary protection for humanitarian workers in Yemen and to immediately and unconditionally release all detained UN personnel in the country.

The “A3+” group concluded its statement by renewing its unwavering support for Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and independence, and by affirming its enduring solidarity with the Yemeni people in their pursuit of peace, security, and dignity.
