National Committee Reveals 258 Violations Against Journalists in Yemen and Demands Their Protection

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The National Committee to Investigate Human Rights Violations announced the completion of its investigation into 258 cases of violations against male and female journalists in Yemen, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on May 3rd.

In a statement, the committee affirmed that these violations included arbitrary detention, in absentia executions, confiscation of media institutions, in addition to threats and harassment that impede the work and movement of journalists.

It pointed out that during the first quarter of 2025, it held six listening sessions with journalists who had been subjected to serious violations, where the victims revealed inhumane detention conditions, physical and psychological torture, and prevention from communicating with their families, which led to the displacement of many families.

During their testimonies, the journalists stressed that any political settlement or peace agreement would not be successful without achieving justice and holding those responsible for these violations accountable, while rejecting any “fragile settlements” that ignore their rights.

The committee clarified that it relies on professional mechanisms in documenting violations, including direct interviews with victims, examination of medical reports, documentation of confiscated journalists’ property, as well as hearing sessions with those released and their families.

It expressed its concern regarding the continued detention of Yemeni journalists despite Yemen’s commitment to international conventions that guarantee freedom of expression, calling for their immediate and unconditional release, and an end to all violations, including arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances.

It also urged civil society and human rights organizations to continue defending the rights of journalists, stressing that freedom of the press and access to information are a fundamental pillar for building a stable democratic society.
