U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the US is committed to disrupting the Houthis’ financial networks and blocking their access to banking services as part of its ongoing approach to counter Iran’s influence.
In a statement posted by the Department on “X”, Bruce said, “Yesterday, Thursday, April 17, the U.S. government imposed sanctions on the International Bank of Yemen for providing financial support to the Houthis, as well as on key leaders or officials in the bank: Kamal Hussein Al-Jabri, Ahmed Thabet Noaman Al-Absi, and Abdul Qader Ali Bazaraah.”
She reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting the internationally recognized Yemeni government’s efforts to ensure that the country’s banking sector remains free from Houthi control.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed new sanctions on the International Bank of Yemen, citing its financial support to the Houthis as the reason for the action.
