UN Envoy on Houthi Involvement in Support of Iran: Escalation Drags Yemen into Regional War and Wider Conflict

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed deep concern over the Houthi group’s recent decision to engage in the regional war in support of Iran by launching military attacks against Israel.

In a statement released this Sunday, Grundberg said: “This escalation threatens to drag Yemen into a regional war, which will increase the difficulty of resolving the conflict within Yemen, deepen its economic repercussions, and prolong the suffering of civilians.”

The UN envoy emphasized that no party has the right to plunge the country into a wider conflict. He also called for maximum restraint and an immediate halt to further military actions.

He affirmed the continuation of his efforts with Yemeni, regional, and international parties, calling on the Houthis to utilize diplomatic channels and mediation to de-escalate and prevent the further regional spread of the conflict.

Furthermore, he reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the achievement of a just and sustainable peace in Yemen, demanding that all parties prioritize the interests of the Yemeni people and avoid further involvement in regional confrontations.
