Fire Engulfs Shelter Of Three Families In An IDP Camp In Marib, Eastern Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Marib / Newsroom:

A fire broke out at noon on Monday in Al-Jufainah camp in Marib Governorate (eastern Yemen), destroying the shelter of three displaced families and causing material damage to their belongings.

Local sources reported that the fire started in the southern sector of the “Lower Al-Jufainah” camp, south of Marib city, and spread to three tents and temporary shelters inhabited by the affected families, consuming furniture as well as shelter and food supplies.

The Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Marib (a government body) stated that the fire did not result in any human casualties.

Eyewitnesses from camp residents indicated that the preliminary cause of the fire may have been an electrical short circuit resulting from unsafe wiring, combined with weather conditions and strong winds.

Civil defense teams moved immediately upon receiving the report and, in coordination with security forces, were able to contain the fire, control the flames, and prevent them from spreading to nearby shelters.

Marib Governorate hosts more than two million internally displaced persons, spread across more than 200 camps and settlements. They fled areas under Houthi control due to repression by the Iran-backed group, which has controlled the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, since September 2014.
