Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) has revealed the reality of Yemeni-Chinese movements regarding the development of the Port of Aden, confirming that they remain within the framework of preliminary understandings and have not yet turned into an official agreement with the Yemeni government.
The Center stated that it prepared a position paper titled “Yemen and China: Postponed Economic Understandings,” which addressed Chinese investment opportunities in Yemen—particularly in the ports and infrastructure sectors—and the obstacles faced in light of local and regional complexities.
The paper reviewed Yemeni-Chinese relations and their importance to the latter, especially regarding the security of maritime corridors and the Belt and Road Initiative, given Yemen’s geographical location overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, through which approximately 12% of global trade passes.
The paper touched upon the impact of war and regional and international competition in the region on Yemen and its economic relations, noting that Yemeni-Chinese relations have witnessed a state of diplomatic continuity in recent years despite the complexities of the war in Yemen.
The paper presented three main scenarios:
- An acceleration of economic and diplomatic cooperation should the political and security situation in Yemen improve.
- An escalation of international competition in the Red Sea, negatively impacting partnership opportunities.
- A continuation of the current situation, characterized by active diplomatic relations without translating them into strategic projects on the ground.
The Studies and Economic Media Center emphasized that this paper is part of its research efforts to analyze the economic and geopolitical shifts affecting Yemen, providing analytical insights that contribute to supporting decision-makers and understanding the opportunities and challenges associated with the future of the Yemeni economy and its international relations.
