China announced a new development grant to Yemen worth 15 million Chinese yuan, along with full customs duty exemptions for all Yemeni products exported to Chinese markets, in a move aimed at supporting economic recovery and strengthening reconstruction efforts in the country.
The announcement came during a virtual meeting between the acting Chinese ambassador to Yemen, Zhao Zheng, and Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Afrah Al‑Zouba. The meeting discussed ways to enhance economic and development cooperation between the two countries and expand prospects for bilateral partnership.
Zhao stated that the full tariff exemption would help stimulate trade and create new opportunities for Yemeni exporters to enter the Chinese market. He confirmed that the grant will be allocated to reconstruction and development projects, with the procedures for signing the agreement to be completed at a later stage.
The meeting also addressed activating the memorandum of understanding related to the Belt and Road Initiative, signed between the two countries in 2019, and reviewed opportunities to benefit from Chinese expertise in solar energy, infrastructure development, capacity building, and scholarships.
For her part, Minister Al-Zouba expressed the Yemeni government’s appreciation for China’s continued support, emphasizing Yemen’s desire to expand cooperation with China in areas such as renewable energy, electricity, ports, infrastructure, and industrial zones, describing China as an important development and strategic partner for Yemen.
