Human Rights Demands to Criminalize Enforced Disappearance to End the Suffering of Detainees in Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Abductees’ Mothers Association has called for the creation of specific legislation to criminalize enforced disappearances and torture, alongside the activation of laws that protect human rights monitors and the documentation of violations.

During a meeting today in the temporary capital, Aden, between representatives of the association and the Minister of Legal Affairs, Ms. Ishraq al-Maqtari, the group urged the release of individuals who have received judicial release orders that remain unexecuted under the pretext of imposing large financial fines.

The association’s demands included forming a specialized oversight committee involving the Attorney General and the Ministry of Legal Affairs to uncover the fate of the disappeared, expressing readiness to participate in these committees to strengthen oversight and ensure the file is handled with legal seriousness.

The association emphasized the importance of activating laws to protect monitors and documenting violations, and opening confidential reporting channels to ensure the safety of families and victims when filing complaints, highlighting its commitment to advocating for the cause of the abducted until their release, the accountability of those involved in violations, and the achievement of justice and redress for the victims.
