National Investigation Committee Documents Conditions of 200+ Detainees in Three Aden Police Stations

YEMEN MONITOR / NEWSROOM:
The National Committee to Investigate Allegations of Human Rights Violations (NCIAHRV) conducted a series of field visits on Tuesday to prisons and detention centers across the Dar Saad, Sheikh Othman, and Mansoura districts of the temporary capital, Aden, including a dedicated facility for women.
According to the committee’s findings, the census of detainees across the facilities is as follows:
- Dar Saad Police Station: 17 detainees in the first building and 65 in the second.
- Sheikh Othman Police Station: 54 detainees.
- Mansoura Police Station: 69 detainees.
- Women’s Detention Center (Mansoura): 6 female detainees.
The detainees include individuals held pending investigation, those currently on trial, and convicted prisoners.
The committee stated that these visits fall under its legal mandate to assess the humanitarian and legal conditions of detainees and to ensure facilities adhere to human rights and dignity standards. During the tour, the visiting team—represented by committee members Judge Jihad Abdul Rasoul and Judge Dr. Diaa Muhairez—inspected holding cells and wards to verify levels of ventilation, hygiene, healthcare, and nutrition.
Detainees and police officials shared the primary challenges facing these centers. Inmates specifically emphasized the need for the expedited resolution of their cases and the guarantee of fair trials.
The NCIAHRV plans to submit urgent recommendations to relevant authorities to address current shortcomings and strengthen the rule of law within the detention system.
