Aden Industry Office Bans Non-Biodegradable Plastic Bags

YEMEN MONITOR / NEWSROOM:
The Office of Industry and Trade in the temporary capital, Aden, issued a circular on Tuesday banning the manufacture, distribution, and import of non-biodegradable lightweight plastic bags (LDPE).
The Director General of the Industry and Trade Office, Brigadier General Wasim al-Omari, explained that the decision provides wholesalers and importers a maximum grace period of three months to clear their existing stocks. Factories have been granted a six-month window to adjust their operations and transition to industrial activities that align with approved environmental standards.
Al-Omari emphasized that all commercial and industrial establishments must comply with the new directive. He confirmed that regulatory teams will initiate deterrent legal measures against violators immediately following the expiration of the specified deadlines.
The move aims to address the severe damage caused by plastic accumulation to infrastructure and the marine environment, with the ultimate goal of creating a safe and sustainable urban environment.
