Washington Calls for Female Representation in the Upcoming Yemeni Government
Yemen Monitor – Newsroom:
The United States expressed, on Wednesday, its interest in ensuring that the new Yemeni government includes female representation, as consultations led by Prime Minister Shay’a Al-Zandani continue to form a new cabinet.
In a statement published on the “X” platform, the U.S. Embassy to Yemen said it is following the government formation consultations, expressing its appreciation for Al-Zandani’s efforts to move toward a government that reflects geographic diversity and is based on competence and experience, in a way that achieves practical results in the interest of Yemenis.
The embassy emphasized its hope to see women included in the expected lineup, noting that women represent half of Yemeni society and that their presence in decision-making positions has remained limited in previous periods.
These statements come at a time when reports indicate that the current government includes no women among its members. A government source had suggested, in remarks to the official news agency (SABA) on Monday, that consultations to form a technocratic government would be completed within days, pointing out that the process focuses on selecting figures with integrity, competence, and experience, and who are capable of implementing a reform program covering economic, service, and security aspects.
Al-Zandani has been leading efforts to form the new government since his appointment to the post in mid-month, succeeding Salem bin Breik, amid official efforts to reorganize conditions in the liberated governorates and enhance stability there.
