Yemeni Army Thwarts Houthi Attempt to Re-establish Military Checkpoint South of Taiz

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Local sources told Yemen Monitor that the Houthi group attempted to re-establish a military checkpoint in the Sarbit sub-district of the Same’a District, south of Taiz Governorate, on Friday morning. The site was subsequently targeted for the second time by Yemeni Army artillery.

Sources explained that the group had attempted to establish the same checkpoint about a week ago, but National Army forces forced them to withdraw after targeting them with artillery. When the group returned to the site today, Army artillery units stationed on the Al-Silw front, which overlooks the area, shelled the position again.

Last week, the Popular Resistance in the Same’a District warned the Houthi group against continued transgressions and provocations, specifically following their initial attempt to set up an armed checkpoint in Sarbit.

In a statement released last Saturday, the Popular Resistance confirmed that Houthi elements withdrew from the site after being shelled by the National Army and Popular Resistance from the Al-Silw front.

The Resistance reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement signed nearly ten years ago between the sheikhs and notables of Same’a—both those supporting the legitimate government and those affiliated with the Houthis. This agreement stipulates the neutralization of the district from the conflict and rejects any military presence within its geographical boundaries.

The Popular Resistance warned that continued violations would force them to take necessary measures to defend the Same’a District and the dignity of its residents. They called upon the district’s sheikhs and tribal leaders to stand united against any attempts to drag the region into a cycle of chaos and armed conflict.
