UN Warns of “Imminent Famine” in Yemen

Yemen Monitor / New York / Exclusive:
The United Nations has warned of a catastrophic humanitarian deterioration threatening the lives of millions in Yemen. It called on Yemeni parties and the international community to take urgent action to avoid sliding into new military confrontations and to prioritize the national interest to achieve a comprehensive peace process.
Ramesh Rajasingham, Director of Coordination at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), issued a stark warning before the Security Council. He confirmed that more than 18 million Yemenis—equivalent to half the population—will face acute food insecurity within the coming month.
The UN official explained that tens of thousands of Yemenis are living in famine-like conditions, noting that women and girls are the most affected by this crisis, as they are often the last to eat and receive the smallest available portions.
For his part, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stressed that Yemen is at a critical crossroads. He urged Yemeni leaders to invest in political and institutional work rather than resorting to force or fueling fragmentation.
“The last thing Yemen needs right now is a conflict within a conflict,” Grundberg stated, emphasizing that there is a genuine opportunity to move toward stability and a comprehensive peace process instead of drifting back toward military confrontation.
The UN Envoy concluded his briefing by asserting that the unity of the Security Council and the coordinated exercise of its influence will be decisive in steering Yemen toward the right path and avoiding escalation scenarios that would further deepen the suffering of the Yemeni people.
