Human Rights Network Holds STC and Its Supporters Responsible for Abduction of Mukalla Port Director General

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms holds the Emirati-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) fully responsible for the abduction of Engineer Salem Ali Basameer, the Director General of Mukalla Port, and his forcible transfer along with four other individuals to unknown locations.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Network declared that “the abduction of Engineer Salem Ali Basameer constitutes a complete crime of enforced disappearance and a grave violation of the Yemeni Constitution, as well as the provisions of international human rights law, particularly the right to liberty, personal security, and the guarantees of a fair trial.”

The Network emphasized that abduction, unlawful detention, the distribution of weapons to civilians, and support for militias rebelling against the state are crimes that do not lapse with time. It affirms its full right to pursue those responsible internationally and to activate accountability mechanisms before relevant United Nations bodies and mechanisms, including Special Procedures and the Human Rights Council, to ensure impunity is not an option.
