Arab League Warns STC Against Undermining Yemen’s Unity
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called for prioritizing the supreme interests of the Yemeni people and avoiding escalation in the governorates of Hadramowt and Al-Mahra. He emphasized that recent developments in the two governorates could further complicate the Yemeni crisis and threaten the principle of Yemen’s territorial unity.
Aboul Gheit stressed the Arab unified position’s firm commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, rejecting any interference in its internal affairs. He reaffirmed the Arab League’s support for the legitimate Yemeni government led by the Presidential Leadership Council.
In this context, Aboul Gheit urged all Yemeni parties—particularly the Southern Transitional Council (STC)—to adhere to de-escalation and refrain from taking any steps that could undermine the country’s unity. He warned of the negative repercussions that any military or political escalation could have on the Yemeni people.
The Secretary-General affirmed that addressing the Southern issue must be pursued through comprehensive political dialogue that tackles the root causes of the crisis and lays the groundwork for a sustainable settlement, away from imposing faits accomplis or any practices that could threaten Yemen’s unity.
This statement comes as the STC began an incursion into the strongholds of the Hadramowt Tribal Alliance in the center of the oil-rich province in southeastern Yemen, after mobilizing forces from several regions. This move follows a warning issued by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia regarding the dangers of unilateral military movements in the Hadramowt and Al-Mahra governorates.
