Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

UK has provided an important clarification regarding its vote in the UN Security Council on the resolution concerning Yemen, emphasizing the importance of the resolution in enhancing efforts to monitor and deter violations of the arms embargo against Yemen.

Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated during the Council session that the adoption of the resolution reflects the Council members’ continued commitment to supporting peace and stability in Yemen.

The statement explained that the resolution will help strengthen the Security Council’s ability to track violations and prevent the financing and smuggling of weapons to the Houthis, thereby reducing the threat posed by this group to Yemen’s stability and maritime security in the region. It stressed that the goal is to strike a balance between deterrence and limiting the Houthis’ influence without harming the humanitarian situation experienced by the Yemeni people.

The statement also highlighted the importance of developing the sanctions regime in line with the complexity of the current situation, particularly regarding the transfer of dual-use components and the need to enhance monitoring of vessels suspected of trafficking weapons or related materials.

It further emphasized the need for coordination between the 2140 Sanctions Committee and other committees to monitor the flow of weapons, financing, and the movement of individuals linked to armed groups in Yemen and Sudan.

The UK underscored the crucial role played by UN sanctions as part of international efforts to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace in Yemen, affirming its continued support for this cooperative path.

According to what was published on November 14, 2025, the resolution represents a key step in confronting the security and political challenges that threaten the future of Yemen and the wider region.
