Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Hundreds of African migrants arrived in Shabwah Governorate on Saturday morning, coming via the coasts on perilous sea journeys carried out by smuggling boats.
Local sources indicated that this influx comes amid a clear escalation in the number of arrivals to Yemen, with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recording a noticeable increase in migration movements over the past month.
In a recent report, the organization revealed that the number of migrants arriving in Yemen during October exceeded 17,685 people, marking a 99% rise compared to September, with a significant majority being Ethiopian migrants, who accounted for about 97% of the total, while the remaining percentage consisted of Somali migrants.
This continuous escalation in the flow of migrants towards Yemen reflects increasing humanitarian and security challenges, especially in Shabwah Governorate and the country in general, amid the growing phenomenon of maritime smuggling that exploits the current circumstances.
