Large Fire Hits Banana Farms in Abyan

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
A massive fire broke out early Friday in the banana farms of the Al-Kod area in Zinjibar district, Abyan province (southeastern Yemen), causing material losses and widespread concern among farmers, according to local sources.
Witnesses said the flames began after banana leaf waste caught fire inside one of the fields, before quickly expanding due to strong winds and reaching parts of neighboring farms, allowing the fire to spread in a short time.
A large number of residents and farmers gathered in an attempt to contain the blaze, but the initial response faced significant difficulties due to the density of the trees and the dryness of agricultural waste, which helped fuel the fire.
With continued collective efforts, they eventually managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other farms.
Farmers have long warned about the increasing amount and dryness of agricultural waste in the area, calling on the authorities to provide equipment for collecting it and to establish a designated disposal site away from agricultural zones, to avoid recurring fires that could threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of families.
