Prominent Yemeni Academic Faces Unknown Fate After Houthi Summons
Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:
Informed sources reported on Monday that communication has been cut off with Dr. Humoud Al-Awdi, a prominent Professor of Sociology at Sana’a University, after he responded to a summons from the Houthi group’s Security and Intelligence Service.
Journalist Fares Al-Himyari, Xinhua Chinese news agency’s correspondent in Yemen, quoted a source close to Al-Awdi as saying that the professor “left his home this morning in response to the summons and has not returned yet, and communication with him has been completely lost.”
Dr. Al-Awdi is considered a well-known academic figure for his moderate views and quiet criticisms. He had recently published a post on his Facebook page criticizing the reality of governance in Yemen and the manifestations of sectarian extremism, comparing them to democratic experiences in the West.
