The Local Authority in Al-Mahra Affirms Its Support for Economic Reforms and Demands Consideration for The Governorate’s Special Status

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:

The local authorities in Al-Mahra (eastern Yemen) confirmed today, Monday, their full support for the government and its efforts to implement economic and financial reforms.

The extraordinary joint meeting of the Executive Office and the Local Council, headed by Governor Mohammed Ali Yasser, stressed the importance of the reforms being fair and balanced, taking into account the special status of Al-Mahra governorate, in a way that ensures the stability and development of resources, enhances the relative financial independence of the governorate, and encourages investment in it.

The local authority in Al-Mahra demanded the necessity of keeping the Nishtun Port open for commercial and economic traffic, as it is an official and legal outlet serving the governorate and the nation generally, in accordance with the regulations and laws in force.

The attendees announced their full backing of the local authority and their support for its efforts in managing the governorate’s affairs, maintaining general stability, and ensuring the continuity of services.

The joint meeting approved officially submitting the meeting’s outcomes to the government and the Ministries of Finance and Local Administration, to serve as a basis for dialogue and understanding regarding a fair and realistic mechanism for resource management and the implementation of economic reforms.

This meeting comes days after the escalation of a dispute between the local authority and the government over the conflict concerning financial resources in the governorate, following the Presidential Leadership Council’s decision on the comprehensive economic reform plan, which mandates depositing revenues with the Central Bank and prevents local authorities from interfering in customs entry points and closing a number of unofficial ports.
