Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
A fish exports center, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was inaugurated today in Hadhramaut Governorate (eastern Yemen) as part of the project to enhance institutional and economic resilience in Yemen.
The center includes two fish preparation halls, an ice factory, a quality control laboratory, administrative offices, and specialized technical staff, in addition to other service facilities. It was clarified that the center will serve Hadhramaut in exporting fresh fish products by providing beneficiaries with health certificates that facilitate export operations and ensure product quality.
The Fish Exports Center provides comprehensive support for various stages of the fish value chain, starting from fishermen to traders and exporters, contributing to increased export capacity and opening new markets, especially in Gulf Cooperation Council countries, primarily the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, for exporting high-value fish such as tuna and distinguished demersal species.
Hadhramaut Governor, Mr. Mabkhout bin Madi, praised the efforts of the European Union and its ambassador to our country, appreciating the fruitful cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme and the implementing agencies. He emphasized that the opening of the Fish Exports Center represents a strategic step towards developing the fisheries sector in Hadhramaut.
For his part, the European Union Ambassador, Mr. Patrick Simonet, expressed his happiness with his visit to Al-Mukalla and the opening of the Fish Exports Center, praising the significant cooperation from the leadership of the governorate to ensure the success of development projects. He pointed out that the project is a true fruit of the partnership between the European Union, local authorities, and the United Nations Development Programme.
It is worth mentioning that Hadhramaut includes four export centers: the Fish Exports Center, the Onion Export Center, the Date Export Center, and the Honey Exports Center, which aim to provide modern infrastructure for producers, farmers, and fishermen, enabling them to improve the quality of their products and increase their added value, ensuring the sustainability of economic activity in the governorate.
