Houthis Release Yemeni Model Intisar al-Hammadi After Years of Arbitrary Detention and Torture
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Yemeni actress and model, Intisar al-Hammadi, was released from Houthi prisons in Sana’a on October 25, 2025, following a prolonged and abusive detention that lasted over four years and eight months. Al-Hammadi was initially arrested on February 20, 2021, on what human rights groups have consistently described as fabricated charges.
In November 2021, she was sentenced to five years in prison by a Houthi-run court. During her time in detention, al-Hammadi endured long periods of physical and psychological torture, as well as systematic insults and humiliation.
Her case file highlights severe human rights violations, including forced confession under duress, racist insults, and class discrimination. Most notably, she resisted a coercive attempt to subject her to a forced ‘virginity test,’ a silent refusal that human rights advocates view as a powerful act of human resilience against oppression. She also reportedly rejected offers of freedom conditional on betraying others, prioritizing her dignity over conditional liberty.
SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties stated that al-Hammadi’s release is not a favor granted by her jailers but the restoration of a fundamental right unjustly taken. The organization stressed that her case exemplifies a pattern of systemic repression against women in Houthi-controlled areas, where freedom is criminalized and obedience is enforced through a weaponized religious discourse.
SAM affirmed that al-Hammadi’s ordeal reflects the suffering of thousands of detained women who face multiple violations, including deprivation, humiliation, social stigmatization, and a double punishment from both the authorities and a silent society.
The organization called on international authorities to launch an independent investigation into the circumstances of al-Hammadi’s detention and the violations she suffered, demanding accountability for those involved under international law, and compensation for her years of imprisonment and torture. SAM also urged the immediate release of all individuals arbitrarily detained by the Houthi group and a halt to all repressive practices based on moral, political, or class grounds.
According to SAM, true justice requires holding the perpetrators accountable, opening investigation files, acknowledging the violations, and providing reparations, not merely releasing the victim. The organization emphasized that al-Hammadi’s freedom is a moral imperative that obligates society to confront injustice with courage.
Al-Hammadi’s release is seen as marking the beginning of a new phase, raising the importance of protecting Yemeni women from all forms of violence and enabling their access to justice, participation, and dignity, particularly amid frequent silence and complicity from the community and its institutions. Her story remains a living testament to resilience and dignity against an oppressive regime, underscoring the vital need to struggle for freedom and rights amidst ongoing transgressions in Yemen.
