During the meeting, President Al-Alimi praised the efforts of the UN and its Secretary-General in alleviating the suffering of Yemenis and advancing efforts toward achieving a comprehensive and sustainable peace. He reaffirmed the PLC and the government’s commitment to the peace option in accordance with local, regional, and international terms of reference, foremost among them Resolution 2216.

Al-Alimi also reviewed the escalating economic and humanitarian challenges resulting from the Houthi militia attacks on oil facilities and shipping vessels, along with continuous human rights violations, including the detention of UN staff and civil society leaders. The head of the PLC reiterated his call for the relocation of the main headquarters of international organizations and UN agencies to the interim capital of Aden, commending the step taken to move the Office of the Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator there.

For his part, Guterres affirmed the UN’s commitment to continue working with the PLC and the Yemeni government, and to provide increased protective measures for aid workers, in support of efforts to achieve security, stability, and peace in Yemen.
