Taiz… The Memory Museum Opens to Document the Suffering of War and Siege

Yemen Monitor/Taiz/Exclusive:

Today, Saturday, the Undersecretary of Taiz Governorate, Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Senwi, inaugurated the Memory Museum, an event organized by “SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties” in partnership with the Association of Mothers of the Abducted and the “DT Institute.” The event, which is being coordinated with the Office of Siege Affairs and Culture and the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, will last for three days.

In his opening speech, Al-Senwi confirmed that the exhibition embodies a part of the suffering of Taiz residents as a result of the war, siege, and bombardment that targeted civilians, historical landmarks, and infrastructure. He praised the efforts made by the organizing bodies and described the museum as a documentary initiative that deserves support.

The head of the “SAM” organization explained that the purpose of establishing the museum is to preserve the community’s memory, promote a culture of not forgetting, and ensure that facts remain present in public consciousness to counter attempts at erasure and falsification. The museum also aims to provide a space for education, advocacy, and documenting the suffering of victims.

For his part, Maher Al-Absi, the director of the Office of Siege Affairs, told “Yemen Monitor” that the exhibition reflects the ongoing crime of the Taiz siege.

He noted that the opening of the Al-Qasr roundabout crossing did not end the suffering of the residents. He added that the organizing body later seeks to turn the exhibition into a permanent museum that documents the effects of war and siege as a tool for transitional justice.

The opening ceremony was widely attended by representatives from cultural, political, and academic institutions, as well as civil society organizations.
