Yemen’s Olympic U-23 team clinched a valuable and hard-fought victory against Bangladesh with a dramatic stoppage-time goal in the 93rd minute, during the second round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
Substitute player Mohammed Al-Awami scored the winning goal with his very first touch after entering the pitch, handing the “Olympic Reds” three crucial points that strengthened their hopes of reaching the finals.
Although Yemen’s performance was far from convincing—marked by disorganization and frequent failed long passes—the players’ persistence until the final moments turned the tables. Bangladesh nearly capitalized on Yemen’s defensive lapses, but alert defending denied them.
With this win, Yemen raised its tally to 6 points from two consecutive victories, following its 2-1 triumph over Singapore in the opening round. The team now heads into the decisive final group-stage clash against host nation Vietnam in a strong position.
