“Grundberg” Calls for a Unified International Approach to Settle the Ongoing Conflict in Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Special Envoy of the United Nations to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has called for a unified international approach to end the conflict, warning that divergent international positions are hindering the chances of achieving a comprehensive and sustainable peace.

This came in a statement issued on Wednesday following the conclusion of his visit to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where he met with the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, and a number of regional and international officials.

He affirmed that the meeting with Al-Alimi focused on the deteriorating living conditions of Yemenis and the urgent need to move towards a political agreement that paves the way for a just settlement.

The UN envoy highlighted the importance of continued regional support to create a conducive environment for a solution. During his meeting with the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council, he noted that UN efforts would not succeed without unified and coordinated international support.

Grundberg expressed his deep concern about the continued detention of UN staff, diplomatic missions, and humanitarian organizations by the Houthis, considering these practices to undermine trust and obstruct political and humanitarian endeavors. He emphasized that diplomatic efforts to secure their release are ongoing.

This UN initiative comes amid the faltering implementation of the roadmap that Grundberg announced in December 2023, which stipulated a comprehensive ceasefire and humanitarian and economic measures. However, it remains stalled due to mutual accusations between the government and the Houthis regarding its obstruction.
