Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The General Authority for Antiquities and Museums in Taiz has announced the resumption of restoration and maintenance work at the historic Al-Qahira Citadel. The work coincides with the citadel’s inclusion on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites, and is part of an international project funded by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) and the U.S. Mission in Yemen.
The current phase of the project involves restoring the fortress gate, which was damaged by war and climate change. A local team of trained artisans, supervised by engineers from the Authority’s branch in Taiz and in cooperation with international restoration experts, is carrying out the work.
The project will span 20 months and is expected to contribute to the preservation of one of the city’s most prominent historical landmarks, while also creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for dozens of families in Taiz.
