Seven African Migrants Drown, Others Missing After Boat Sinks Off Yemeni Coast

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Seven African migrants have died and others are missing after a boat sank in the Arabian Sea near the Ahwar district of Yemen’s southern Abyan governorate.

Security forces recovered the bodies of several illegal Ethiopian (Oromo) migrants after a smuggling boat capsized off the coast of Zanzibar as they attempted to enter Yemen.

In an official statement, the Abyan Security Department said that public security forces and the security belt are continuing search efforts for the missing despite a lack of available resources. The bodies have been transported to hospitals in Zanzibar for necessary procedures.

Security authorities called on the international community to intervene immediately to stop the flow of migrants through Yemeni territorial waters, warning of the escalating humanitarian and security disaster resulting from smuggling networks exploiting the current situation in the region.

According to security sources, the incident reflects the worsening crisis of irregular migration to Yemen, which requires urgent international action to address its serious consequences.
