Hadramout: Al-Bandar Theater Troupe Faces Lawsuit After Exposing Suffering of Do’an Residents

Yemen Monitor/Hadramout/Exclusive:

The crisis in Do’an district, Hadramout governorate, has escalated, as the issue of collapsing services has turned into a legal battle between the local authority and an artistic group.

Al-Bandar Theater Troupe sparked wide controversy during their recent performance in the city, where they frankly addressed the deteriorating living conditions that residents have been enduring for years.

An Artistic Cry Reflecting a Bitter Reality

The theatrical segments depicted the citizens’ suffering from prolonged power outages, water shortages, dilapidated roads, and the absence of basic services, a scene reflecting continuous neglect by officials.

The troupe not only highlighted the problems but also directed sharp criticism at the Director-General of Do’an District, Salem Bankhar, who — according to the performance — failed to provide any tangible solutions despite years in office.

Surprising Official Reaction

In response, the Director-General filed a lawsuit against the troupe members, describing the play’s content as “transgression and distortion.” Residents, however, viewed it as an attempt to silence critical voices instead of addressing the crises.

This step sparked a wave of widespread anger among the residents, who affirmed that the troupe had only spoken the truth and that the play was merely a mirror reflecting their daily reality.

Widespread Popular Solidarity

The issue ignited popular protests, with hundreds marching on Sunday morning in a massive demonstration that started from Ribat Ba’ashen Bridge, carrying banners demanding improved services and supporting the artists’ right to express people’s concerns.

Chants condemning the deteriorating living conditions and asserting that repression would not silence legitimate demands grew louder, while calls spread on social media to intensify pressure until demands are met.

Human Rights and Cultural Support

Human rights and cultural organizations expressed their condemnation of the legal pursuit of artists, affirming that creative work falls within freedom of opinion and expression. They called for respecting art’s role in exposing flaws and driving reform.

It is worth noting that the Al-Bandar Troupe enjoys great popularity in Hadramout, known for its bold works that genuinely and transparently touch upon community issues, making it an eloquent voice for citizens’ hopes and concerns.
