Chinese Envoy Urges Houthis to Halt Attacks on Red Sea Ships

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called on the Houthis in Yemen to stop attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
China expressed deep concern over the recent armed attacks on two cargo ships in the Red Sea and renewed its call for the Houthis to respect the navigational rights of commercial ships of all countries in the Red Sea in accordance with international law, cease targeting commercial vessels, and help ensure the safety of maritime routes in the Red Sea, according to Geng Shuang, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
China also voiced concern over the latest exchange of fire between the Houthis and Israel and the escalating situation, as Geng told the UN Security Council. He added: “We urge all parties to remain calm and exercise restraint, and to avoid any actions that could escalate tensions.”
Geng called on all parties of the conflict in Yemen to demonstrate political will, enhance dialogue and communication, gradually build mutual trust, and create conditions conducive to a final political settlement of the Yemeni issue.
He also urged the international community to step up humanitarian aid to Yemen and contribute to alleviating the crisis on the ground.
Geng stressed that the problems in Yemen and the Red Sea cannot be resolved without de-escalating the broader regional situation.
He added, “The war in Gaza must end as soon as possible. The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza must end as soon as possible. The two-state solution must be implemented as soon as possible.”
He further stated that the ceasefire agreement between Israel, the US, and Iran must be upheld, emphasizing the need to respect state sovereignty and adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
