Al-Mahra Security Committee: Houthi Al-Zaidi Detained, Operations Continue to Track Armed Elements

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The Security Committee in Al-Mahra Governorate issued a statement today, Tuesday, revealing the circumstances surrounding clashes in Howf district on Monday evening. This followed the arrest of Mohammed Ahmed Ali Al-Zaidi, a Houthi leader, at the Sarfait border crossing as he attempted to leave the country for Oman.
The committee clarified that Al-Zaidi, a native of Marib Governorate, was carrying a diplomatic passport issued by the officially unrecognized Houthi authorities and identified himself as an officer in the armed forces. He was detained because he was on wanted lists and due to suspicions regarding his legal status and documents.
A military source indicated that an armed vehicle belonging to Al-Zaidi was stationed outside the crossing at the moment of his arrest, prompting heightened security alert and increased guarding around the checkpoint.
During security movements, a military force dispatched from Al-Ghaydah city towards Howf district came under an armed ambush in the Damqout area. This resulted in the death of Colonel Abdullah Zayed, commander of the 137th Infantry Brigade’s Tank Battalion, and injuries to two members of the force.
The source confirmed that the armed elements remain positioned in the surrounding mountains, and security and military operations are ongoing to track them down and apprehend those involved. The source emphasized that Al-Zaidi remains in custody and will be transferred to Al-Ghaydah for further legal procedures.
The Security Committee also stressed that security and military agencies will continue to pursue anyone who threatens the security and stability of Al-Mahra and will not hesitate to take firm measures against outlaws. The committee expressed its appreciation for the sacrifices of the security and military forces, commending their vigilance in dealing with threats and their commitment to protecting the governorate and its citizens.
