Yemeni Political Blocs Call for Urgent International Action to Condemn Houthi Crime Against Sheikh Hantous and His Family

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The National Bloc of Yemeni Political Parties and Components has strongly condemned what it described as a “brutal crime” committed by the Houthi group against Sheikh Saleh Hantous, one of the most prominent Quranic teachers in Raymah governorate, and members of his family. The incident occurred in the village of Al-Mu’adhab, Bani Nafie’a district, Al-Salfiyah.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the bloc stated that “the Houthi militia launched an armed assault on Sheikh Hantous’s home, using over twenty military vehicles before targeting the house with RPGs and setting it on fire, which resulted in him and his wife sustaining serious injuries.”

The statement added that “the Houthi militia prevented the injured from being transferred for treatment, in a blatant violation of all humanitarian and religious laws and customs.” It noted that the shelling was still ongoing at the time of the statement’s issuance, signaling grave humanitarian risks to civilian lives and properties.

The bloc considered this crime a stark example of the contradiction in Houthi slogans that raise the banner of “supporting Palestine” while they continue to suppress and target Yemenis, undermining their security and stability.

The bloc held the Houthis fully criminally responsible for this crime and for the safety of Sheikh Hantoush and his wife. It called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and demanded that the United Nations, the Security Council, and the international community issue a clear condemnation of this crime and expedite measures to classify the Houthis as an international terrorist organization.

The bloc also urged human rights and relief organizations to intervene immediately to evacuate the wounded and provide them with medical care. It called on all national forces to unite ranks and support efforts to restore the state and its institutions, and to confront the dynastic and sectarian project led by the Houthis.

The bloc concluded its statement by renewing its pledge that the blood of the innocent will not be in vain, emphasizing that Houthi crimes will only increase Yemenis’ determination to fight for the restoration of their state and dignity.

The bloc affirmed its full solidarity with the people of Raymah governorate, commending their steadfastness and sacrifices, and considering that their sacrifices “will remain a beacon that inspires generations and accelerates the demise of the priesthood.”
