Yemeni Interior Ministry: 244 Dead and Injured in Traffic Accidents in Two Weeks

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni authorities recorded 244 deaths and injuries from traffic accidents in the liberated governorates (from the Houthis) during the first half of June. This comes amid a notable surge in the number of traffic accident victims.

The Security Media Center, affiliated with the Ministry of Interior, reported that these traffic accidents resulted in the deaths of 33 people and injuries to 211 others, with 109 cases described as severe. Material losses from these accidents are estimated at approximately 204 million and 245 thousand Yemeni Rials.

The center clarified that a total of 185 accidents were recorded. These included 95 collisions between vehicles, 45 run-over incidents, 30 rollovers, 7 cases of falling from vehicles, 7 collisions with fixed objects, and one accident resulting from a sudden movement (lurching) of a vehicle.

Authorities attributed these accidents to a range of violations, most notably excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, driving while fatigued, distraction while driving, lack of vehicle maintenance, and underage driving. Other contributing factors included reckless motorcycle driving, poor road infrastructure, and disregard for traffic police instructions by both drivers and pedestrians.
