UN Warns Against Escalation Between Houthis and Israel, Calls for Dialogue
Yemen Monitor/Washington/Exclusive:
The United Nations has called for restraint following another wave of escalation between the Houthis in Yemen and the Israeli occupation.
On Wednesday, the Israeli occupation launched airstrikes on Yemen’s main airport in the capital Sana’a, destroying the last operational Yemenia Airways plane. The attack came a day after the Houthis launched missiles at Israel.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the attacks “between the Houthis and Israel are exacerbating an already very fragile situation in Yemen and the wider region.”
He added, “Attacks on civilian infrastructure, including Sana’a Airport in Yemen and Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, are unacceptable.”
He noted that the strike on Sana’a Airport and the destruction of the civilian aircraft “deprives many Yemenis of a crucial means to leave the country for medical, educational, family, or religious reasons, especially at a time when thousands of pilgrims are preparing for Hajj.”
The spokesperson called on all stakeholders, including the Houthis, to de-escalate, exercise restraint, uphold their obligations under international law, and protect civilian infrastructure.
He also urged the warring parties to return to intra-Yemeni dialogue, supported by the region, as the only viable path towards lasting peace and security.
