Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi held bilateral talks on Wednesday, with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The discussions focused on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and coordinate positions on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
President Putin welcomed President Al-Alimi and his accompanying delegation, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to supporting Yemen and its people in achieving security, stability, and peace.
He expressed confidence in the development of bilateral relations in a way that serves the interests of both countries and enhances regional security and stability. He also highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties based on friendship and mutual respect.
For his part, President Al-Alimi provided President Putin with a detailed briefing on developments in Yemen, expressing hope for positive outcomes from this visit, which coincides with the 97th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
He emphasized the depth of Yemeni-Russian relations, founded on balanced interests and Russia’s continued support for Yemen through various phases.
President Al-Alimi also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Russia’s steadfast stance in support of Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy and its people. He praised Moscow’s support for efforts to achieve peace, end the suffering of Yemenis, and its condemnation of terrorist threats to international maritime navigation and global security.
He also referenced the rich legacy of cooperation between the two countries across economic, political, military, educational, health, and cultural fields.
President Al-Alimi addressed the economic, service-related, and humanitarian deterioration in Yemen, noting that terrorist Houthi attacks on oil facilities have worsened the crisis. He also acknowledged the financial support provided by the Coalition to Support Legitimacy.
Al-Alimi stressed the importance of a unified international stance on the Yemeni issue and enhancing efforts to combat terrorism, piracy, and organized crime.
He also appreciated Russia’s supportive position on Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state in accordance with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Earlier, President Al-Alimi met with Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the Russian State Duma, in Moscow.
The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations and legislative coordination, as well as recent developments in Yemen and peace efforts — with mention of the Houthis’ intransigence and the legitimate government’s openness to solutions.
The talks also covered Russia’s supportive stance on Yemen in international forums, along with other regional and international issues of mutual concern.
For his part, Volodin reaffirmed Russia’s support for restoring security and peace in Yemen, noting that the visit would strengthen cooperation at all levels, particularly in parliamentary coordination and knowledge exchange.
