Aden Witnesses Second Women’s Demonstration in a Week Demanding Improved Services

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Hundreds of women took to the streets on Saturday in a women’s demonstration in the Khor Maksar district of Aden city, the second protest of its kind within a week, under the slogan “Women’s Revolution,” demanding the improvement of deteriorating living and service conditions and an end to the collapse of electricity and water services, amid warnings of an escalation in protests if the demands continue to be ignored.

The demonstrators raised banners reflecting their anger at the near-total power outage, which exceeds 20 hours daily in coastal areas, while other governorates are experiencing a complete blackout, in addition to the deterioration of health and educational services and the rise in poverty rates due to the economic collapse.

The demonstration came days after an unprecedented women’s protest was organized in the same square, where participants affirmed that “their patience has run out” and called on the authorities to take urgent action.

For his part, the head of the Yemeni government, Salem bin Buraik, commented on the crisis, acknowledging the “extent of the suffering” and stressing that the government is working with the Saudi-Emirati coalition “to provide urgent solutions,” without providing concrete details.

It is worth noting that Aden and neighboring governorates are experiencing an unprecedented services crisis, attributed to the scarcity of fuel needed to operate power plants as a result of the halt in oil exports for two years, which has deprived the government of a major source of funding for services, amid warnings of worsening conditions with the increasing heat of summer.
