Somali President Reveals Houthi Collaboration with Terrorist Groups in Somalia
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has revealed alarming connections between Yemen’s Houthi movement and active terrorist organizations in Somalia, such as ISIS and Al-Shabaab, citing cooperation in arms smuggling and the transfer of military expertise.
In an article published by Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, the Somali president confirmed that his country recently intercepted shipments of weapons and explosives originating from Yemen, and dismantled a smuggling network that supports these groups.
He warned that the threat of terrorism in Somalia is not confined to the local level, but poses a broader danger to regional security.
President Mohamud noted that strategic areas like the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are witnessing increasing activity by extremist groups, including Al-Qaeda and ISIS, which may collaborate despite ideological differences.
He also warned of the risks posed by these organizations’ attempts to control vital maritime routes, endangering the economic security of countries in the region.
The president stressed that confronting this shared threat requires regional and international cooperation to ensure security and stability.
