Calls to Protect Civilians in Yemen After Migrant Deaths

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called for all necessary precautions to be taken to protect civilians in Yemen, following the tragic attack that resulted in the deaths of 68 African migrants in raids targeting a migrant shelter in Saada Governorate.
In an official statement, the ICRC expressed its shock at this deadly attack, noting the high number of victims, including many migrants who were in the detention center.
The ICRC stated that its teams, in cooperation with the Yemen Red Crescent Society, began providing urgent assistance since early morning to meet the emergency needs of those affected.
Christine Cipolla, the head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen, said that what happened is a great shock, stressing that it is unacceptable for people to be detained in inhumane conditions and be exposed to fire. She added that this incident highlights the increasing risk of death and serious injury among civilians in Yemen.
Cipolla also reported that the Yemen Red Crescent Society, with the support of the ICRC, evacuated the wounded and provided the necessary care for the deceased, while the ICRC provided medical supplies to nearby hospitals receiving the injured.
The ICRC pointed out that it has made regular visits to detainees at the center over the past years, as part of its efforts to ensure humane treatment and detention conditions.
At the end of the statement, the ICRC reiterated its call to all concerned parties to respect and protect civilians, including those deprived of their liberty, in accordance with international humanitarian law, and to take the necessary measures to avoid civilian casualties.
