Taiz Teachers Continue Strike and Hold Mass Demonstration Demanding Their Rights

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Teachers in Taiz Governorate organized a large demonstration today, Sunday, to demand improvements in their living conditions, as part of their open-ended strike that has continued for three months.

The demonstration was called for by the Educators’ Union in the governorate, with participants holding banners demanding salary increases, addressing the sharp collapse in the value of the local currency, and disbursing overdue entitlements.

The Teachers’ Syndicate issued a statement condemning the government and local authorities’ disregard for their demands, despite the deteriorating economic conditions and the decline in citizens’ purchasing power.

The statement warned of the worsening living crisis that threatens a wide segment of the population, calling on the government to take urgent measures to save the educational process and improve the conditions of teachers.

In a related context, the Follow-up Committee for Teachers’ Demands in Taiz began a series of meetings with government officials in the interim capital, Aden.

Advisor Abdulaziz Sultan, the head of the Teachers’ Syndicate in the governorate, said that the committee met with officials from the Ministry of Finance to discuss the disbursement of overdue salaries and due bonuses, indicating an intention to schedule these payments.

The committee also met with the Minister of Civil Service, Abdulnasser Al-Wali, who affirmed the continued work to meet the teachers’ demands, including the entitlements of 2011 employees related to annual bonuses and the nature of work allowance.

The committee is scheduled to hold additional meetings with the Deputy Minister of Finance and is also seeking to meet with Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak to discuss outstanding issues.
