A Randomly Placed Houthi Minefield In Western Yemen Has Been Discovered, Endangering Civilians

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Saudi-funded “Masam” demining project has discovered a new landmine field in the Al-Suwaidiyah area of Al-Khokha district, located in the southern part of Al-Hodeidah governorate in western Yemen. The mines, planted randomly by the Houthi group, were found in agricultural land and include anti-tank mines.

The discovery comes just days after a tragic incident in the same area, where a landmine explosion claimed the life of a child and his camel, while his father sustained serious injuries while trying to rescue him.

Sami Hamaid, the leader of a Masam team, explained that the mines are dispersed randomly, with distances of up to 300 meters between each mine in various directions. This irregular spacing complicates detection efforts and greatly increases the level of danger.

He noted that the area is one of the most affected parts of Al-Khokha due to the high density of Houthi-planted mines, which have transformed farmlands into deadly fields that threaten the lives of residents daily, despite ongoing efforts by Masam teams to clear them.

The frequent discovery of new landmines highlights the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the Houthis, as civilian casualties from these illegal explosives continue to mount.
