Yemeni Interior Ministry: 22 Dead, 176 Injured in Traffic Accidents Over Two Weeks

Yemen Monitor | Newsroom:

Traffic accidents claimed the lives of 22 people and injured 176 others during the first half of April, including 86 who sustained serious injuries. Material losses were estimated at over 67.7 million Yemeni rials.

According to statistics released by the General Department of Traffic Police at the Yemeni Ministry of Interior, a total of 197 traffic accidents occurred during this period across various liberated areas and provinces (those outside Houthi control).

The report recorded 123 vehicle collisions, along with 41 pedestrian run-over incidents and 23 vehicle rollovers. Additionally, there were 5 cases each of vehicles crashing into stationary objects and passengers falling from vehicles.

The ministry noted that excessive speed, overloading, and improper overtaking were among the leading causes of these accidents. It also cited distractions such as mobile phone use while driving, fatigue, and exhaustion. Ignoring traffic signals, neglecting vehicle maintenance, and reckless motorcycle driving were also identified as contributing factors to the rise in incidents.
