Government Committee Hears Collective Testimonies from Victims of Rights Violations in Socotra

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The National Commission to Investigate Allegations of Human Rights Violations (NCIAHRV) organized a collective hearing session on Tuesday in Hadibu, the capital of the Socotra Archipelago. The session, part of the commission’s field program, was dedicated to hearing testimonies from more than thirty individuals who were subjected to human rights violations over various periods.

During the session, participants provided detailed accounts of practices they endured, which included:

  • Extrajudicial detention and arbitrary arrest.
  • Arbitrary dismissal from employment and professional exclusion.
  • Mistreatment and harassment.
  • Violations targeting journalists, activists, and members of political parties.

These accounts highlighted the infringement of fundamental rights, primarily the right to liberty and personal security, freedom of opinion and expression, peaceful assembly, and the rights to work and education.

The hearing was managed by several commission members, including judges Hussein al-Mashdali, Mohammed Taliyan, Nasser al-Awdhali, and Judge Ishraq al-Maqtari. They recorded the testimonies and documented the facts presented, alongside the humanitarian dimensions of the violations, to include them in official investigation files according to established legal and professional frameworks.

The victims presented a set of demands related to the damages they suffered, emphasizing the need for justice, reparations (redress), and effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such violations in the future.

In a formal statement, the National Commission confirmed that it would continue to hold public hearings across various governorates—specifically regarding cases of forced displacement and arbitrary dismissal. The commission aims to gather evidence on various patterns of violations to enhance truth-seeking efforts, consolidate accountability, and support the path of justice and human rights.

The Commission called upon government agencies and official institutions to fulfill their legal responsibilities, take necessary steps to address the impacts of these violations, and ensure the protection of public rights and freedoms in accordance with the constitution, existing laws, and relevant international obligations.
