Aden… Arrest of a Yemeni Sailor Released from Iranian Prisons

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Local sources reported on Thursday that security forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) arrested Yemeni sailor Mahmoud Hussein upon his arrival at Aden airport from abroad, following concerted international and local efforts that secured his release from the prisons of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Bandar Abbas.
Hussein had been detained since October 2022 after the commercial ship “Eriana,” on which he was the captain’s assistant, was seized. He spent over seven months in Iranian Revolutionary Guard prisons before finally being released.
Local human rights activists stated that the sailor’s detention upon his return to his country has caused widespread astonishment. They demanded his immediate release, noting that he was a victim of arbitrary detention abroad and not an offender whose situation warranted any further investigation or re-imprisonment.
The sources confirmed that Mahmoud Hussein’s arrest was carried out by security elements affiliated with the STC, reflecting the ongoing political tensions in Aden and their impact on the lives of citizens returning from abroad.
According to the sources, human rights organizations have called on the security prosecutions to quickly take the necessary steps to end the sailor’s detention and ensure his rights, in accordance with national and international standards that guarantee the protection of human rights.
