Yemeni Interior Ministry: 17 Charred Bodies Recovered from Abyan Accident Site, 7 Injured

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Yemeni Ministry of Interior stated that it recovered 17 charred bodies from the site of an accident that occurred in the Abyan governorate early this Wednesday morning, while 7 people suffered various injuries and were transported to hospitals for treatment.

The Ministry of Interior reported that the traffic police report revealed that the bus overturned while descending from the Al-Arqub heights in Abyan governorate, leading to its complete combustion.

The accident investigation team’s report clarified that the primary cause of the accident was the driver’s sudden application of the brakes during the steep descent, which caused the vehicle to catch fire, in addition to colliding with another bus, a ‘Foxy’ type, whose material damages were estimated at about 400,000 Yemeni Riyals, while the damages to the (Saudi) passenger bus were estimated at 300,000 Saudi Riyals.

The traffic accident occurred this morning in the Al-Arqub area of the Shuqra district in Abyan governorate, involving the overturning of a mass transit bus belonging to the Al-Hijaz Saudi Travel Company, which was coming from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia heading towards the temporary capital, Aden.

Activists on social media criticized the delayed arrival of rescue teams to the location for several hours, which increased the number of victims who were trapped by the fire for hours until they perished, before any rescue teams could reach them.
