Hadramout… People of Tarim Launch Escalatory, Peaceful Protests Against Worsening Living Conditions

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The people of Tarim District in Wadi Hadramout have announced the start of a comprehensive, peaceful, and escalating protest movement. They are protesting the injustice and marginalization they face amidst a rapid deterioration in living conditions and a worsening of service crises, with no serious response from the relevant authorities.

These measures include suspending the movement of commercial trucks until further notice and closing money exchange offices and banks from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., as a means to pressure financial institutions to stabilize the exchange rate and halt its manipulation.

The actions also include closing all fuel stations from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., allowing only three stations to operate daily on a rotating basis. In addition, large commercial stores will be temporarily closed until there is a noticeable drop in exchange rates and food prices.

The people of Tarim affirmed their continued presence in the protest squares until all legitimate demands are met without retreat. They demand a guaranteed, uninterrupted electricity supply in all parts of the district, the urgent payment of salaries for teachers and education sector employees, and the reopening of schools to resume classes.

Protesters also announced the closure of the local authority headquarters in Tarim starting next Thursday until all demands are met. They emphasized the need for an immediate reduction in the prices of petroleum derivatives and domestic gas.

The statement stressed the peaceful nature of the protests and warned against any acts of sabotage, such as burning tires. It called on neighborhood leaders, sheikhs, dignitaries, and all people of the district to join the popular protest squares to strengthen unity and shoulder their historical responsibility in this critical phase.

“Our rights will not be granted; they will be seized by the voice of the people and their courageous stance,” the statement said. This clear message reflects the determination of the people of Tarim to reclaim their legitimate rights and achieve a dignified life.
