Aden’s Electricity Crisis Worsens: PM Acknowledges Public Frustration
Yemen Monitor/ADEN :
The electricity crisis in Aden escalated significantly on Monday, with power outages reaching a staggering 21 hours a day, leaving residents with only 3 hours of electricity. This comes as Yemeni Prime Minister Salem bin Brik held meetings to discuss solutions, yet no tangible actions have been announced.
Prime Minister Bin Brik, who was appointed in February, stated during a meeting of the Supreme Energy Council that citizens “are no longer waiting for statements or meetings… rather, they are looking for solutions that address their daily suffering.” Despite this acknowledgment of public frustration, the government has yet to present any concrete solutions to the worsening crisis.
In response to the prolonged blackouts, protests erupted on Monday morning, with demonstrators demanding an immediate resolution to the electricity shortage and blocking several streets in Aden.
Mohammed Jamil, a local resident, expressed widespread disillusionment, saying, “All this failure, and a council of eight (referring to the Presidential Leadership Council) cannot provide electricity in the summer. What’s the point?”
Aden has grappled with persistent power outages for years, but the situation has dramatically worsened recently. Bin Brik had previously pledged to provide electricity and essential services within 100 days of his appointment.
