From Aden: British Ambassador Highlights UK Efforts in Supporting Yemen’s Health and Maritime Security

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

British Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif, reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Yemen in the fields of health, governance, and security, as well as in enhancing livelihoods for citizens across various regions, during the conclusion of her visit to the temporary capital, Aden.

The ambassador explained that UK support includes the provision of life-saving medicines, vaccines, and nutritional supplements to over 700 health facilities, which has contributed to treating more than 700,000 Yemeni children.

The UK is also providing cash grants that have helped secure food for approximately 850,000 people, along with technical and institutional support to the Yemeni government in the electricity and finance sectors.

During her visit to Aden, the ambassador toured UK-funded humanitarian and development projects, visited a health clinic and a camp for internally displaced persons, and expressed admiration for the generosity of the Yemeni people, which she described as “a reflection of the true spirit of Yemenis.” She called for unified efforts and focused action to improve the lives of citizens.

Sharif revealed that the UK has allocated more than £1.5 billion in aid to Yemen since 2015, including £144 million in the past year alone to support emergency humanitarian response efforts.

She also noted ongoing support for Yemen’s coast guard through the provision of refurbished vessels, advanced communication equipment, and solar power systems. Additionally, she highlighted the “Yemen Maritime Security Partnership,” a UK initiative aimed at strengthening maritime security and stability in coordination with Yemeni authorities.

The ambassador concluded her remarks by stressing that alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people remains a priority for the UK, reaffirming her country’s commitment to continuing humanitarian and development assistance to help build a better future for Yemen.
